Victoria Mine Shafts
Victoria historic mine shafts: where the old workings are, and where to keep clear.
What it shows
The Geological Survey of Victoria's register of historic mine shafts, concentrated on the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields. A shaft is direct evidence that someone found a reef worth sinking on, and a field of them maps the old workings far more finely than a scatter of mine points does, showing which ground the diggers came back to. About one shaft in a hundred also carries the reef it was sunk on, and where the register names one the tap shows it, in the same words old reports and maps use. It doubles as a safety layer: many of these shafts are still open.
Before you rely on it
Historic shafts are a hazard. Many are open, unfenced, hidden by scrub or only loosely capped, and the recorded position can be tens of metres out. Treat every one as dangerous and never approach an open shaft. The same shaft is sometimes recorded twice from different sources, so nearby duplicates are expected.
