What it shows

The forest and bush tracks Victoria's road register marks as needing a four-wheel drive, which is how most of the goldfields are actually reached. Each track carries its own name where the register holds one, the locality it runs through, and the closure recorded against it: none recorded, a seasonal closure, or closed. The seasonal ones matter most, because thousands of high-country tracks shut over winter and reopen in spring. A tap on one gives the months a track closes and reopens rather than a single day, because a closure that comes round each year is set to fresh dates every time, so last year's day is no use for planning. Not every seasonal track follows the winter pattern and some may not repeat at all, so the tap also gives the year the closure was last recorded, which is what says how current it is. Read the layer as a record of closures rather than a promise of access. A track with nothing recorded against it is one the register holds no closure for, not one anyone has driven today.

Before you rely on it

Closure status comes from the state road register, not a live feed. A track with no closure recorded can still be shut by fire, flood, a fallen tree or a locked gate, and the exact seasonal dates move each year. Check current closures with the land manager before setting out, and turn back at any sign on the ground.
