Victoria Deep Leads
Victoria deep leads: the buried Tertiary river channels that carried gold.
What it shows
The deep leads of Victoria, drawn from the Geological Survey's mapping. A deep lead is an ancient river channel that was buried, usually under a lava flow, with its gold still sitting in the old gravels. They produced enormous quantities of gold in the rush era and their courses still explain where gold is found today. Most are named, and those names are the ones the old reports and company records use, which makes this a way into the written history as much as a map. Two mappings are combined: a detailed survey that covers part of the state, and a statewide compilation that fills in the rest. Where the detailed mapping exists it also records whether a stretch was ever worked.
Before you rely on it
Deep leads are buried, often under many metres of basalt and clay, so this is geological interpretation rather than something you can see or reach. Courses are approximate and the two mappings behind this layer disagree in places. A lead crossing your ground is a reason to read the history, not a place to dig.
