Victoria Burnt Ground

What it shows
Burnt ground across Victoria, mapped by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, covering the last three years. Each fire is shaded by the year it burnt, newest in a hot orange through to the oldest in a pale ash, and each year can be shown or hidden on its own. Victoria is the only state that also grades how hard the fire burnt, so a second filter separates ground where the tree canopy itself burnt from ground where only the understorey went through. Both matter for prospecting: a fire that took the canopy leaves open, thinned country where old workings and creek terraces show up and a coil can be swung. Older fire is left out because the country grows back: past about three years a scar has closed in. Fires under 50 hectares are left out to keep the download manageable.
Before you rely on it
Boundaries are mapped after the fire, mostly on public land, so edges are approximate and burnt ground on private land can be missing. Fires under 50 hectares are left out, and nothing older than 2024 is included. Ground that burnt in the last few months may not be mapped yet, and the most recent seasons carry no severity grade.
