Victoria Public Land

Victoria public land: State forest, parks and reserves, with what each one is.

What it shows

Every parcel of public land in Victoria, from the state open-data service, labelled with its management class. This is the layer that answers what the ground actually is. State forest matters most: it covers over three million hectares and is the main place a Miner's Right permits prospecting. National parks, regional parks, nature conservation reserves, water production land and water frontages are all drawn alongside it. Tap a parcel to see its management class, or filter the layer to show one class at a time. It is a description of the land, not a permission to dig: prospecting status varies by class, and parks allow prospecting only inside designated areas. Read it together with the protected-area overlays and confirm before you go. Victoria maps this ground three ways and each is its own layer, so with the protected-area and restricted Crown land layers on you will see the same boundary outlined more than once. That is the three layers agreeing, not a repeat: this one says what the land is, the overlays say what is declared over it, and restricted Crown land says where mining is shut out.

Before you rely on it

This says what the land is, not whether you may prospect on it. State forest is generally open with a Miner's Right, parks allow prospecting only inside designated areas, and many other classes do not allow it at all. Check the protected-area overlays and current tenements too, and confirm before you dig.
