What it shows
Shallow-drill samples from Western Australia, coloured by how much gold each one held: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is a spot where a shallow auger or drill hole was put down and the material it brought up tested for gold by an exploration company and lodged with the state in WAMEX. Shallow drilling samples the weathered ground just below the surface, deeper than a soil sample but well short of a full drillhole, so it can see through thin cover that a surface sample would miss.
