Western Australia Burnt Ground

Where Western Australia burnt between 2021 and mid-2023.

What it shows

Burnt ground across Western Australia, from the national fire record kept by Geoscience Australia. Fire older than about five years is left out across this whole family, because the country grows back and a scar that old no longer marks ground worth walking. That leaves a narrow slice here: the national record has nothing for Western Australia after June 2023, so this layer covers 2021 to mid-2023 and every scar in it reads as older ground. Each year can be shown or hidden on its own. In the goldfields and the rangelands a burn opens the country for years, so a scar from this period can still be worth walking, but recently burnt ground is missing rather than absent. Fires under 10 hectares are left out.

Before you rely on it

This comes from the national fire record, which for Western Australia stops in June 2023, so nothing that has burnt in the last three years is shown and every scar here is at least three years old. Boundaries are mapped after the fire and edges are approximate, fires under 10 hectares are left out, and more than half the records do not say whether the fire was a bushfire or a planned burn.

Putting this on your map

Taking a layer from the Library onto a stack, and tuning how it draws, is a short guided tour on your own map.
