What it shows
Detailed surface geology for Queensland, from the Geological Survey of Queensland, painted in the survey's own per-unit colours. The coloured areas are rock units (lithology). The lines are the structures mapped on top of them: faults and shear zones, geological contacts, folds, dykes, and marker beds such as chert bands. Geology is the layer to read before anything else, as it shows why gold sits where it does. Faults and shears are where fluids moved and gold dropped, and contacts between rock types often mark the same boundaries. Tap a unit for its name, rock type and age, or a line for the structure type. Use it to follow a favourable rock or a fault in the direction it runs, into new ground.
