What it shows
Stream sediment samples from New South Wales, coloured by how much gold each one held: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is a spot where fine material was scooped out of a creek bed and tested for gold by the Geological Survey of New South Wales. A creek bed catches whatever is eroding out of the whole catchment above it, so an anomalous reading means gold is coming from somewhere upstream rather than from that spot. It covers a lot of country quickly, which makes it the broadest first look at where gold is shedding into the drainage.
