What it shows
Drillholes across New South Wales, coloured by the gold recorded for the hole: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is one drill collar, the spot on the surface where a hole was put down and logged by the Geological Survey of New South Wales. New South Wales publishes one gold figure per hole rather than a value for every depth, and does not say whether that figure is the hole's best result or an average of it, so read it as the hole taken as a whole. Drilling is the most direct measurement there is of what is actually in the ground, so these mark where hard-rock gold has been confirmed rather than only suggested by surface sampling.
