New South Wales Burnt Ground

Where the New South Wales park estate has burnt in the last three years.

What it shows

Burnt ground on the New South Wales park estate, mapped by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and covering national parks, nature reserves and state conservation areas over the last three years. Each fire is shaded by the year it burnt, newest in a hot orange through to the oldest in a pale ash, and each year can be shown or hidden on its own. Bushfires and planned burns are separated, so the cool patchy mosaic of a hazard-reduction burn can be told apart from the ground a bushfire went through. Fresh ground is the reason to look: a recent burn strips the grass and thins the scrub, so old workings and creek terraces show up and the ground is open enough to swing a coil over. Older fire is left out because the country grows back. Fire outside the park estate is not in this layer.

Before you rely on it

This covers national parks, nature reserves and other land the National Parks and Wildlife Service manages. Fire on freehold or other Crown land is not mapped here at all. Boundaries are mapped after the fire, so edges are approximate, fires under 10 hectares are left out, and nothing older than 2024 is included.
