Tasmania Burnt Ground
Where Tasmania has burnt in the last three years.
What it shows
Burnt ground across Tasmania, compiled by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania from the fire records of the state's fire and land-management agencies, covering the last three years. Each fire is shaded by the year it burnt, newest in a hot orange through to the oldest in a pale ash, and each year can be shown or hidden on its own. Bushfires and planned burns are separated. Fresh ground is the reason to look: a recent burn strips the buttongrass and thins the scrub, so old workings and creek terraces show up and the ground is open enough to walk. Older fire is left out because the country grows back, and fires under 10 hectares are left out as well.
Before you rely on it
Records are compiled from several Tasmanian agencies and appended once a season, so ground that burnt in the last few months may not be mapped yet. Boundaries are mapped after the fire and edges are approximate, fires under 10 hectares are left out, and nothing older than 2024 is included.
