What it shows
Classic topographic contours over Tasmania, cut at a 10 m interval from Geoscience Australia's national bare-earth elevation model. Every line joins ground at the same height, so the closer the lines sit, the steeper the slope. The heaviest line always marks every 100 m of height and carries its number, whichever spacing is chosen, so a height can be counted off quickly. The elevation model has trees and buildings stripped away, so the lines follow the ground rather than the canopy. Read the contours to find the gullies, spurs, benches and saddles that gold moves through, and to judge how hard a route will be before walking it. Use the Detail setting to switch between 10 m and 20 m spacing, whichever reads better for the country being worked. The elevation model is mapped at about 30 m on the ground, so a small bank or a narrow terrace may not show its own line.
