What it shows
Drillholes across South Australia, coloured by the most gold found anywhere down the hole: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is one drill collar, the spot on the surface where a hole was put down and logged by the South Australian Department for Energy and Mining, published through SARIG. The reading shown is the best result from any depth in that hole, so a bonanza collar means the drill went through high-grade gold somewhere beneath it. Drilling is the most direct measurement there is of what is actually in the ground, so these mark where hard-rock gold has been confirmed rather than only suggested by surface sampling.
