What it shows
Rock chips from the Northern Territory, coloured by how much gold each one held: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is a spot where a chip of rock was taken off an outcrop and tested for gold by the Northern Territory Geological Survey. A rock chip tests the rock itself rather than the soil sitting over it, so a high reading means gold is in the rock at that exact spot rather than washed in from somewhere else. That makes rock chips the most direct surface pointer to a reef.
