Queensland soil samples tested for gold, coloured by how much each one held.

What it shows

Soil samples from Queensland, coloured by how much gold each one held: low (background, under 10 ppb of gold), anomalous (10 to 100 ppb), high (100 to 1000 ppb), or bonanza (1000 ppb and over). Those cutoffs are in parts per billion (ppb), where 1000 ppb is about one gram of gold in a tonne of rock. Each point is a spot where soil was collected and tested for gold by the Geological Survey of Queensland. Soil testing is the usual first pass over new country. It shows where gold has weathered out and spread through the soil near the surface, which is not always where the solid rock sits. A tight cluster of anomalous or higher readings marks ground worth a closer look, and a line of them following a creek or the boundary between two rock types often points back to the source. Queensland holds one of the densest soil-sampling records in the country.
